Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); 11 May 2026: Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been released on bail and transferred to hospital for medical treatment. Mostafa Nili, the lawyer of the prominent human rights defender, announced that his client was transferred by ambulance from a hospital in Zanjan to Pars Hospital in Tehran on Sunday, 10 May 2026, after spending 10 days hospitalised there. He stated that her sentence had been temporarily suspended following the posting of a heavy bail, and that she is now under the supervision of her own medical team for urgent treatment.
IHRNGO calls for the revocation of Narges Mohammadi’s prison sentence and her full release, along with all political and prisoners of conscience.
Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the organisation’s director, said: “We are pleased that Narges Mohammadi is now receiving medical treatment and care, but we must remember that this is only a suspension of the implementation of her sentence. The global campaign for Narges and all political and prisoners of conscience must continue until all sentences are revoked and they are unconditionally released. Peaceful civil activism is not a crime.”
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation announced the news in a statement published on Sunday, 10 May, describing the suspension of her sentence as insufficient and adding: “Narges Mohammadi requires continuous specialised medical care. We must ensure that she never returns to prison to face the remaining 18 years of her sentence. The time has now come to demand her unconditional release and the dismissal of all charges. Human rights and women’s rights activists must not be imprisoned for their peaceful activities.”
The statement also expressed the gratitude of the Narges Mohammadi Foundation and her family for the unwavering support and solidarity of the international community.
Shirin Ardakani, another lawyer representing Narges Mohammadi in France, also stated that her client’s transfer from prison to hospital “was achieved thanks to the mobilisation of global civil society and human rights diplomacy efforts that pressured the authorities.”
Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was violently arrested in Mashhad on 12 December 2025 and transferred to Zanjan Prison, where she was held in violation of the principle of separation of prisoners according to their charges, alongside prisoners convicted of violent crimes, including murder and drug-related offences. Reports also indicate that she was continuously subjected to harassment, abuse and threats by some of those prisoners.
This marked the third time that Narges Mohammadi had been transferred to Zanjan Prison. Previously, on 17 May 2012, while she was due to be transferred from solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison to the women’s political ward, she was instead sent to Zanjan Prison to increase pressure on her. Furthermore, on 25 December 2019, following a sit-in protest in Evin Prison against the killings during the November 2019 protests, state forces violently beat and transferred Narges Mohammadi to Zanjan Prison.
The human rights defender is facing approximately 18 years in prison in several cases.
