The January 2026 Protest Killings in Iran

Sept. 17, 2026, 7 a.m.

This report has been prepared with the aim of recording verifiable names and information of individuals killed during the protests and examining recurring patterns in their deaths. In addition to the list of those killed, the report examines testimonies and illustrative cases to demonstrate the scale and patterns of crackdown across different provinces. The report focuses on cases where sufficient information was available to verify identity, time, location or circumstances of death.

Documenting and publishing the names of victims extends beyond the compilation of statistical data. Each name on this list represents an individual life, an affected family and a documented account of events during the protests. Preserving these verified names and records safeguards historical truth, preventing the erasure or distortion of what occurred. Clarifying the full scope of the killings through rigorous documentation serves as an essential step towards truth-seeking and ultimately, justice for victims and their families.

Given severe communication blackouts and restrictions, security pressures on families, the difficulty of accessing medical and judicial records and the atmosphere of repression following the protests, this report does not claim to present a final count of those killed. The published list must be considered the minimum number of cases that IHRNGO has been able to examine and verify against specific criteria by the time of this report's publication.

The appendix of this report contains the list of all documented individuals killed. A total of 322 cases of those killed whose names were reported by only a single unofficial source and where insufficient information was available regarding their identity, time, location or circumstances of death have been included in a separate table.

IHRNGO will continue its efforts in collecting information, verifying names and documenting cases related to the December 2025–January 2026 protests. We invite families of those killed, witnesses, healthcare workers, journalists, local activists and anyone with access to verifiable information to contact us to assist in completing this documentation. New information may include details of individuals whose names are not yet listed, supplementary details regarding the time, location or circumstances of death, photographs and documents, as well as corrections to entries that may have been recorded erroneously or incompletely.

This list is not a closed or final document. Upon receiving credible new information, names and details can be corrected, supplemented or updated. Our objective is to present as accurate and documented a picture as possible of those killed and the extent of the repression, ensuring that no victim's name is permanently erased from the historical records of these events due to current restrictions on access to information.
