Iranian Political Prisoner Majid Assadi Denied Medical Treatment

Iran Human Rights (IHR), June 3, 2019: Majid Assadi, a former student activist in the Rajai-Shahr prison of Karaj, suffering from health problems related to his eye, liver fibrosis, and back pain. He is deprived of treatment due to officials refusing to send him to the clinics out of prison.

According to Iran Human Rights sources, Majid Assadi, a political prisoner and a former student activist in the Raja'i Shahr prison in Karaj, suffers from serious physical problems without access to treatment.

A person with close ties to Majid Assadi said: "He suffers from severe inflammation in his retina, and according to the doctor the highly pressured conditions he lives under has made his retina thicker, causing the inflammation. Because of this, his doctor emphasized that an examination every three months was necessary. His last visit to an eye specialist was in the Iranian month of Farvardin (March/April) last year, and the black spots in his right eye are exacerbated, which is very worrying."

"In addition, the Liver fibrosis problem that occurred after his second arrest was only medically pursued to the point where he received the result of his examinations confirming the existence of this fibrosis. Thereafter his surgery was cancelled due to the prison's denial to let inmates off prison to receive medical treatments from specialists. This has left us in a very worrying state,” the source said, "Another issue is the inflammation in Majid’s spine, caused by the psychological hardship induced on him from both arrestations. This condition requires medical supervision and not the inappropriate conditions in the prison, worsening the disease. Majid received medical treatment and used medication for the inflammation of his eye and spine before his second arrest since these conditions were caused by his first arrest.“

Majid Assadi was arrested by forces from the Ministry of Intelligence at the house of his family in Karaj, at 10:00 PM on February 18th, 2017 and transferred to ward 209 at Evin Prison. He was trialled in the court charged for: "1. propaganda against the regime and the community and 2. conspiracy against the regime", and ultimately sentenced to one year in prison the first time and five years in prison and two years in exile in Borazjan, the second time. This verdict was upheld by a court of appeal."

Majid Assadi, an economics graduate from Allameh Tabataba'i University and a member of the Central Council of the Islamic Association of the Faculty of Economics, had previously spent 4 years in jail between 2011 and 2015.
