Iran: Woman Hanged in Nowshahr Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHR); July 17, 2019: A woman was hanged at the Iranian northern city of Nowshahr’s prison this morning.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), a woman was hanged at the Iranian northern city of Nowshahr’s prison on Wednesday.

IHR sources revealed the identity of the woman as Zahra Safari-Moghaddam. She was sentenced to death for murdering a five-year-old boy named Bardia Hatami.

Quoting the woman, IRNA stated that she had been under stress when committing the murder. Sources told IHR that Zahra was suffering from a mental disability.

At least 110 people were executed in Iran in the first half of 2019; Only 37 of the executions have been announced by authorities or Iranian media. Iran Human Rights (IHR) could confirm 73 more through its sources. IHR only reports the unannounced executions if it could confirm those with two separate credible sources. Therefore, the actual number of executions may be even higher than reported.
