Unannounced Executions Are Continued in Iran

Iran Human Rights (IHR); April 9, 2020: IHR can confirm an execution was carried out on March 9 at the central prison of Zanjan city, Iran. The execution has not been announced by the authorities so far.

According to IHR sources, death-row prisoner Sirous Assadi was executed at Zanjan prison, 300 km north-west of the capital, Tehran.

“Sirous was arrested for murdering a barber during a fight over financial issues,” a well-informed source told IHR. He was sentenced to qisas (retribution in-kind) by an Iranian court.

According to IHR’s Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, 70% of all executions carried out in the 2019 report (196 out of 280) were not announced by the authorities.

Executions in Iran have continued to be carried out even after the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country.
