Verdict in Political Prisoner Hamed Ghara-Oghlani’s Case Includes Death and Imprisonment

Iran Human Rights (IHR); December 7, 2020: In the verdict issued to political prisoner, Hamed Ghara-Oghlani who is currently imprisoned in Urmia Central Prison, he has been sentenced to both death and 13 years and three months in prison. The case has been sent to the Court of Appeal.

Arrested by security forces on June 27, Hamed Ghara-Oghlani was tried before numerous judges in Branch Two of the Urmia Revolutionary Court.

Two informed sources who wished to remain anonymous, told Iran Human Rights that the majority of the judges had sentenced Hamed to 13 years and three months imprisonment and a minority of the judges had issued the death penalty. The case has been sent to be heard before an appeals court.

According to the information obtained by Iran Human Rights, some of the judges had sentenced him to death on charges of moharebeh (enmity against God) while others did not believe it to be the case. The charges against him which have been denied by his family include membership in Mojahedin Khalq (MEK), tearing a photo of Qassem Soleimani, insulting the leadership, propaganda against the system, participating in military training and attacking IRGC bases.

Following his arrest on June 27, Hamed Ghara-Oghlani spent 19 days in solitary confinement in the Urmia intelligence cells and was transferred to Urmia Prison after the completion of his interrogations on July 16.

Hamed suffers from epilepsy and does not have regular access to his medication in dormitory 3, ward 3 of Urmia Central Prison, where he is being held.
