Anvar Abdollahi, Baha-oddin and Davood Ghasemzadeh Transferred for Execution

Iran Human Rights (IHR); July 3, 2021: Death row prisoners Anvar Abdollahi, Baha-oddin and Davood Ghasemzadeh, all sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions in Urmia Central Prison this morning. Two other prisoners were executed at the prison on drug charges this morning.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, three men were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions in Urmia Central Prison. The identities of the three prisoners sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder have been established as Anvar Abdollahi, Baha-oddin and Davood Ghasemzadeh.

Baha-oddin and Davood Ghasemzadeh are brothers have been behind bars since 2009.

Their transfer comes after Nasser Azmoudeh and Shahriar Amiri who were sentenced to death on drug-related charges, were executed in the same prison this morning.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
