Abdolghafar Cheshmdam-Gargij Executed for Murder in Zahedan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 18, 2022: Abdolghafar Cheshmdam-Gargij, a Baluch prisoner sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on January 17, bringing the number of executions at the prison on that day to two.

According to Resanak, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on the morning of January 17. 34-year-old Abdolghafar Cheshmdam-Gargij was from Haji Abad in Zahedan and residing in Zabol before being sentenced to qisas for murder.

Abdolghafar was arrested on the charges in 2018 and had been behind bars since.

Iran Human Rights previously reported the execution of Abdolbaset Rigi on January 17, bringing the number of executions in Zahedan Central Prison to two on that day.

At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
