4 Men Executed for Drug Offences in Shiraz; 5 at Imminent Risk of Execution

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); March 16, 2022: Four men sentenced to death on drug-related charges were executed in Shiraz Central Prison. Five other men held in solitary confinement are at imminent risk of execution.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, four men were executed in Shiraz Central Prison (Adelabad) on the morning of March 13. The identities of two of them have been established as Jamshid Fadayi and 37-year-old Hossein Mehrabani. All four men were sentenced to death on drug-related charges, two men have yet to be identified.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Jamshid Fadayi had been behind bars for around three years and Hossein Mehrabani for around four years for carrying drugs.”

At the time of writing, the four men’s executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Five other men are also currently in solitary confinement are at imminent risk of execution. Of the five, two were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder and two sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that 50 prisoners were transferred from Pirbanoo Prison (Shiraz) to Shiraz Central Prison to be executed.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.
