Four Men Executed for Murder in Karaj

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 16, 2023: Vahid Dinpajuh, Hamed Ahmadi and two unidentified men were executed for murder charges in Rajai Shahr (Gohardasht) Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, four men were executed in Rajai Shahr (Gohardasht) Prison on 13 June. Two of the men’s identities have been established as Vahid Dinpajuh and Hamedi Ahmadi. They were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

One of the men’s execution was reported by state media. According to Javan Online, the unnamed man was sentenced to qisas for the murder of his wife around four years ago.

At the time of writing, the other three men’s executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to the 2022 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 582 people were executed in Iran. Of those, 288 were executed for murder charges.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
