20+ Men Transferred for Execution in Ghezelhesar Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); August 6, 2024: More than 20 men including four Afghan nationals, who are on death row for murder and drug-related charges, have been transferred to the pre-execution cells of Ghezelhesar Prison in Karaj.

Iran Human Rights once again calls on the international community to react to the mass killing of prisoners in Iran.

IHRNGO Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “The international community should not permit the leaders of the Islamic Republic to exploit global distractions on Iran-Israel tensions to carry out mass killings of prisoners and escalate repression within the country.”

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, more than 20 death row prisoners were transferred to the pre-execution cells of Ghezelhesar Prison on 5 and 6 August.

Informed sources told IHRNGO that at least four of the men are Afghan nationals. 12 of those transferred for execution are on death row for murder charges and the remaining for drug-related offences

A Ghezelhesar prisoner told IHRNGO: “They’ve closed the doors in the wards. They’re scheduled to be executed tomorrow. All the cells are full, we don’t know exactly how many of them there are. They couldn't beat Israel, they’re taking their revenge on prisoners.”

Executions have hiked after the recent presidential elections in Iran. Transferring more than 20 prisoners at the same time is unprecedented in recent times.

UPDATE (6 August 2024): following the publication of the above, IHRNGO obtained new information that six other murder death row prisoners have also been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions. The number of those awaiting the gallows may be even higher.
