Baluch Political Prisoner Omar Derastaran Hanged in Zahedan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); 12 October 2026: State media reported the execution of Omar Derastaran, a Baluch political prisoner convicted of baghy (armed rebellion) through membership of Jaysh al-Adl. A short video of his torture-tainted confession was aired at the same time as the anouncement. He is the 14th political prisoner to be executed for affiliation with banned opposition groups in 2026.

According to the judiciary’s Mizan News Agency, Omar Derastaran was hanged at an undisclosed location on 12 October 2026. He was sentenced to death on charges of baghy through membership of Jaysh al-Adl. Haal Vsh, a Baluch human rights organisation, reported the location of his execution as Zahedan Central Prison.

Per the official report, Omar was alleged to have scouted military targets, facilitated the cross-border entry and transport of 18 militants, arranged safehouses and supplied weaponry, including automatic rifles and 10 kilograms of explosives. The prosecution directly tied his logistical support to several major incidents, including a raid on the Rask police station that killed 11 officers, as well as coordinated April 2024 attacks on military and law enforcement headquarters in Chabahar and Rask that resulted in additional casualties among security forces.

According to Haal Vsh, Omar was a 25-year-old seminary student from Rask who was arbitrarily arrested on 24 April 2024 by plainclothes intelligence officers without a judicial warrant. Following his arrest, Omar was reportedly held incommunicado and subjected to torture, including flogging at an IRGC detention centre in Zahedan, to extract forced confessions regarding alleged links to prominent cleric Molavi Abdolghaffar Naghshbandi (a Sunni cleric critical of the Islamic Republic and former Friday prayer imam of Rask city).

At least 14 political prisoners have been executed for affiliation to banned opposition groups since March. Of those, nine were in connection with the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI/MEK), three with Baluch groups Jaysh al-Adl and al-Furqan and two with the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI).
